Lost Quilts
Yes, sadly, it's true.
2 suitcases were taken from the locked trunk of my car just after the Quilt Canada conference here in St. John's Newfoundland. I've lost a significant body of work.
Flamboyant
Tropic of Capricorn
Fertility
Several small wall hangings and collages
Almost all of the landscapes from my new book "Points of View"
Also gone are all my teaching samples, slides etc.
Flamboyant in on the homepage of my web site and I'd just borrowed it back from a collector here in St. John's for an exhibition in August.
I still need to make a complete inventory when I get back home to Nova Scotia, so will keep you posted later on next week. In the mean time, keeping an eye on eBay, Kijiji St. Johns', Freecycle web sites and flea markets in the St. John's area are one way to perhaps spot them. Phone the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary if you do. A reward has been posted around this town for their return. There are optimistic people here in St. John's who feel they just may turn up. So, positive thoughts are gratefully received!
I've had an outpouring of support from quilters around the globe. You are all so wonderful and positive. I'll try and respon to you all later on next week.
Right now, I'm staying with my original plan to have a short vacation on the coast of Newfoundland.
I'll post again when I have news and when I can get back to my computer and access to photos.
best,
Val
p.s. I still love Newfoundland!!
Valerie
Every quilter is thinking of you and hoping that the thief has a change of heart and turns your quilts in unharmed.
Anyone can do anything one step at a time!
Valerie:
Yes, indeed every quilter is thinking of you and the pain and anger you must be feeling. Seems they knew exactly who’s trunk they broke in to. If it was a random theft, then the chances of finding your stolen treasures are much better, as they may be dumped somewhere and returned to you.
Hi Val… Bethany from Kingston sending my thoughts and wishes for the speedy recovery of your beautiful – oh’so beautiful quilts, all of your teaching materials and your treasured collection of Landscapes… I cannot tell you how much I dislike thieves – I am exposed to them everyday at work, and it is truly distressing that there are so many people in this world who feel they can just take whatever they want without regard for those who are being victimized…
Please accept this heartfelt HUGG and I will be keeping watch faithfully!
Love
Bethany and your Kingston friends
One positive in this unfortunate experience is that you and your work are known: your website, your blog, your books, your teaching, have all showcased what you have accomplished. That remains indisputably yours. And because you have been such a generous artist and teacher, you are now, as you said, the recipient of a deluge of support. For that, I am happy for you.
As for the stolen work, I wish for its safe return. I can tell, from your other remarks, that someone may have snatched your creative works, but they can’t touch your creative spirit. Bravo!
Valerie,
My heart just sank into my stomach when I read your post just now. I can only imagine what you must be feeling.
When I was in college someone broke into my apartment and took some things – but that was just “stuff.” What this thief/thieves took was part of your heart and soul.
You will be in my thoughts and my prayers that your work WILL be found and returned to you.
I know it will take some time to move beyond all of the different emotions you must feel; BUT no one and no thief can ever take your away your talent, uniqueness, creativity, history, knowledge, and spirit!
We all will keep our eyes open and our awareness keen as we go about hoping to spot these precious items so they may be returned to you.
Becky
