This tiny 9-patch of natural dyed wool feels like a wintry piece. This is my new sewing kit. Some of the linens and a bit of cheesecloth I dyed with plants collected in my local area in the fall. These are homegrown and spun linen and wool sheets I found here in Lunenburg County. Many an old barn here has a dismantled old loom once used to weave the flax and wool raised on the small farms. I hope to add new life to these old heritage textiles through natural dyes and stitches. The old woods in my garden have some 100 year old hemlocks and white pines growing. They provide a feeling of deep peace and beautiful light.Old seed pods in the flower garden with bonnets of fluffy snow.Winter light. This Solstice photo was taken in the woods near my house by my neighbour Chase Sutherland.
I’m touched by your winter light because I’m in the tropics at the moment. It’s winter here too and I walk as soon as it’s light. Shadows are long, the air is cool. There’s been regular rains so wild flowers are abundant. They are mostly vining plants. Very thin, threadlike vines that’s wrap around dead trees, crawl along the ground, twine around cactus. Tiny strange flowers that I observe along the roadway every day. How will I capture them in paint? Enlarged like Georgia O’Keefe? Or crawling over the canvas alive and snake like?
Thanks Carol – the artist eye is continually seeking the beauty around us. I love your new paintings too. I’m finding new love of the winter light, noticing so much more deeply.
Hi Val, Your fabrics do really have a wintery feel…lovely. The photos of the woods and seed pods are beautiful. Wishing you good health in 2019, Marilyn

Thanks Jen. the colours are so subtle, the light so low in the sky. the natural dyes from the plants have given me new eyes to notice more.
